Better Prototyping with your Atmel AVR

Get your AVR Project Going Faster

I’ve been working with AVR microcontrollers for years, and was lucky enough to be a bit lazy – laziness surely is the mother of invention! After a few iterations, I came up with the T-Board – a prototyping platform for the more popular Atmel AVR microcontrollers. These boards got my Atmel-based embedded projects going in no time, and gave me the flexibility that platforms such as the Arduino didn’t offer the more serious hobbyists.

After the T-Board was born, I decided to share my learnings with others, and was really excited to have the opportunity to work with Elektor magazine, a respected international electronics publication. By working together, we’ve made the lives of hundreds of hobbyists and enthusiasts that little bit easier.

After a number of iterations, the final production version of the T-Board is out the door. All three versions (now named the T-Board 28, T-Board 14 and T-Board 8) have been through final testing, including testing by the team at Elektor Labs. A few final tweaks were made to the silkscreen, and after the compilation of a quick-start guide it was all systems go.

Three versions

  • The T-Board 28 is designed for the 28-pin ATmega328 microcontroller from Atmel (and other pin-compatible 28-pin MCUs)
  • The T-Board 14 is designed for the 14-pin ATtiny 24/44/84 Atmel micocontrollers (and a few other pin-compatible MCUs)
  • The T-Board 8 was developed for the baby MCUs of the ATtiny range – the ATtiny 25/45/85

A Few Favourites

Podcasts

  • The Spark Gap is hosted by Karl & Corey, and has some nicely focussed technical topics.
  • The Amp Hour covers a wide range of topics, some humour and a few rants!
  • Embedded.FM is hosted by Elecia and Chris and has a wide range of interesting (and sometimes eclectic) guests.

YouTube Channels

  • AddOhms is run by the Bald Engineer, with awesome short clips
  • Contextual Electronics is Chris Gammel's channel with some great Kicad tutorials
  • Martin Lorton has a funny South African accent like me, and covers a great range of topics. Lots of equipment and solar.

Websites

There are too many to list, so these are some lesser-known ones:
  • edX is a MOOC with some great EE courses for free
  • All About Circuits is an online book taking you from basic electronics through to the serious stuff. Really excellent resource
  • Nuts and Volts Magazine has some great projects, and a series of articles I'm working on so I'm shamelessly plugging it.
